Corteo in Portland

Got to see Corteo in Portland last Friday night and was amazed at the beautiful performances, the awesome tech work and the versatility of all the performers! Being a djembe player, I was especially impressed by the great drumming, especially the duombek (sp!!) work -- wish he could have been on stage then! The drummer also gets big gold stars for portraying his character while keeping the beat, with the stage spinning under his feet - too absolutely cool!!

The only bummer was the $205 tickets for Tapis Rouge that was way over crowded, put us in even tighter quarters to see the show than the regular seats and my man had to go ask for our programs and cd after the show. Plus, what the heck is with another private lounge in the Tapis Rouge that we were not allowed into? We paid the extra for the Tapis Rouge when we saw Varekai two years ago and it was a totally different feel and experience - which is why we spent the super extra this time.

Still basically worth it because it is Cirque, but missed the magic and the extra fun of feeling a bit special for one night!

I am interested in auditioning for the CDS and I am wondering if anyone out there has gone through the audition process before. What can I expect, what should I prepare and who should I talk to?

Any input would be helpful. Thanks.
Sincerely,

I'm taking a trip to Las Vegas for Christmas, and will be there from the 23rd - the 26th.

I'm torn between which Cirque show(s) I should go see. I've already seen "O" and "Love."

Since my boyfriend hasn't seen "O," I was considering going to see that and "Mystere." Since I haven't seen the latter, would they be too similar?

I'll be in Las Vegas this June, out of all the Cirque shows, can anyone recommend one?
O, Mystere, Zumanity or Ka?
I don't think I'd be interested in Love, I've seen Varekai, Dralion, Saltambanco & Quidam.
Any info would be helpful since 2 tickets puts a dent in my wallet.

We reinvent the Circus(VHS/DVD only,)Nouvelle Experience, Saltimbanco, Alegria, Quidam(DVD only sadly) Dralion and Varekai.
My favorites are Nouvelle Expereiance and Varekai...Nouvelle because it was my first time and Varekai because it felt like my first time all over again.
I've only been to Las Vegas once and didn't have the time or money to go see any of the shows there.
Dralion is my least favorite it used to be Saltimbanco until Dralion. I did however really enjoy the clowns in every production they've done including my least favorites.

Varekai is my favorite so far. It's the only one I've seen live (though I have several on video) and I could hadly breathe through the whole show! My breath kept hitching and I just wanted to cry with the beauty of it all. The young man who plays Icarus was a fabulous performer.
Incredibly inspiring and touching with the Icarian theme.
I plan to get to as many Cirque shows as I can after this wonderful experience. I can't wait for the new show "Ka," it looks very dramatic!

Hey you guys!
I just got to work and passed a huge group? Lot? flock? of Cirque du Soleil angels! Their wings must be like 4 feet tall.
I love Cirque! So dramatic!

Did anyone else see them?
I know Cirque is bring Corteo to NY, but does anyone know why the angel wings?

I almost forgot. One of the "clowns" is portrayed by this itsy bitsy manlet. He looks like he could dance a jig on your finger tip. At one point he moves across the stage in a flash--it looks like his feet don't even touch the floor. Now this one is sweet enough to keep in a jelly jar. Just don't hide him under the bed--keep him on the night stand with all of the other fire flies and pretties.

I saw the show here in Columbus. OH. Delerium is presented in large arenas. Go-go-go-everyone must see this show. I am a big fan of the cirque du soleil and I was delighted beyond my wildest dreams. This is a multimedia event featuring equal parts music-musicians-performers of all sorts and video.

When I arrived I was directed to the customer service booth--my ticket beeped at the ticket taker. I was annoyed because I shelled out some major $ for my ninth row seat. Seems that they wanted to fill in audience holes. Everyone was upgraded--I was now in row 1-seat 22. I was freakin out-my seat was center stage and 15 feet away from the performers. What a treat. Any seat at this show is going to be great. The stage is perfect and the folks who aren't up close get to see a great video show.

Just an amazing experience. Has anyone else caught this great show on the road???

I fell in love with one of the Corteo ornaments in the souvenir shop, but did not purchase... problem is, the boutique is inside the cirque, and the online shop announces everything is out of stock.
If you're going to the Cirque in one of the last SF performances, and willing to do me a favour - I'll give you the cash beforehand to buy that little doll for me, plus 10$ for your efforts on delivery. It's that important to me.

I would like to ask kinda a downer Question

When I exitedly brought up Cirque to a clown friend of mine, I almost got my arse bitten off..

...something about how Cirque was unforgivable for taking one if their hired clown's 'face' from their own. I gathered it was very serious..

I think I understand, does anyone know what he is talking about?

Here in Pittsburgh, PA, I've been desperately awaiting the return of Cirque Du Soleil. In the mean time, I saw an incredibly fabulous show of Asian Acrobatics, I think they were called the Golden Dragon. Anyone else ever see them? They are incredible. The show included spinning plates, jumping through hoops, stacking chairs waaaaaaay up high and climbing them to do tricks at the top, a funny/cool hat show, and tons more acrobatic fun. They were brought in by people at the University of Pittsburgh.

Utah police brutalize rave scene

Re: Utah police brutalize rave scene
Copied and pasted....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK... Update time.

I have a friend (D&B DJ Focus) that gave me a few sordid details...

Michael Moore has the story, Rolling Stone is (supposedly) picking it up and Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are being contacted as well. Apparently hundreds of thousands if not millions of people around the country are talking about this...It's going to make a run of MySpace for sure. They are indeed trying to sanitize things... For example the report says guns wereconfiscated- they were- but they were from the property owner's private dwelling. She lives in the middle of Utah Nowhere. You have weapons if you live remotely out there. All legal, but they are trying to twist that.

The police were Utah State police, they were wearing only camo- no police or SWAT identifiers, faces masked, no IDs. Parents around the state are heatedly asking why fully automatic weapons with laser sights were used instead of batons and tasers.

The promoter's girlfriend's picture that was taken of her during jail intake was retouched to attempt to conceal her black eyes and broken nose. She may possibly have reproductive damage from being repeatedly kicked in the stomache. Several other girls were for sure sexually assaulted; I'm not sure if there are any rape charges pending but don't be surprised.

A hunter who was bow hunting earlier in the day who was not at all connected with the event was rousted from his campsite (they used infra red night vision to find him). He explained that he was hunting, had his permit and explained that he had been drinking heavily and just wanted to stay put.

The officer put a cocked fully automatic assault rifle to his head and told him to take his chances driving.

The party organizers prepared for a raid, but nothing like this.

They hired a lawyer a cuple of months in advance to make sure that every single legal t was crossed and every i was dotted. As reported earlier they retained the security services of a well respected and licensed firm and secuity officers were arrested for possesion of drugs even though they were in a marked container and were to be turned in to police officials after the event, as is the standing policy of the security force.

This event was fully, fully legitimate. It was not a "rave" as reported byt was, in fact- by legal definition a "Music Concert". It was NOT an all night event.

The police shut down the last event these promoters had, also on the same private property, also illegally- it seems that they flew the helicopter over and with 1500 people there decided that they had to let it finish- cornering the promoters after the show.

This time they were better prepared. The ACLU is on the case and the #1 civil rights attourney in the country heads their legal team. These people are well organized and fairly well funded. I will be keeping an eye out for information about what people can do to help other than simply spreading the word and not letting this go away.

It is a pivitol time in America right now- with Mom and Pop wqaking up and remembering the 60s and starting to mistrust the government for other reasons.

While many people at this point are refusing to believe that this could happen here- once some more mainsteam media carry the story it will begin to have a positive effect.

One more positive thing that will come out of this is that mom and pop will also have to be aware that this very important story is purposefully being ignored my mainstream media, in a (this time) obvious way.

No matter how many links and websites are hacked (hackers need to get involved because it seems the police are commiting federal crimes, either using their tools to hack the information off the sites, or using intimidation to scare it off- illegal either way) there are too many people aware of this now for it to simply go away.

Updates as I get them.

Le Reve By Franco Dragone

So Le Reve is not a TRUE Cirque show. But Franco was the creator of my FAVORITE cirque shows. We are staying at the Wynn for this trip in Vegas, and decided on Le Reve (www.lereve.com) as it is their show. And the theatre goes COMPLETELY around the stage. Already seen O and Mystere, so the other decision was between Zumanity an Ka.

Has anyone seen this yet, and what is your take on it?

Sort of a fashion-show/cirque ish thing with fantastic costumes & a sexual-sensual aura.

~Wondering if any who had seen it could compare it to Cirque, or had anything to comment.

I may catch it sometime soon!

To whomever it may concern,

I, LaRa of Devadasi, am putting together a 2006 (Non-Profit) Tribal Fusion Bellydance Calendar (Large, 12-month, wall-size) in order to raise money for Doctors Without Borders
( www.doctorswithoutborders.org ). Although Tribal Fusion Bellydancers are a large part of the target audience, it is projected that the consumer audience will be much larger. Furthermore, because this is a non-profit fundraiser, strictly for charity purposes, it is difficult to fund the up-front publishing costs, which can be viewed at ( http://www.yearbox.com/fundraising.html ) . As such, it is my wish to use the last page of the calendar for advertising space. In return for a $100, or more, sponsorship you will have a full-color advertisement in the calendar & recognition for your donation to the project. For a smaller donation of $50-$99, you will receive recognition for your contribution to the project, and your website information will be included.
This calendar, is already being widely anticipated in the bellydance community as it will include full-page professional photos of some of the biggest names in Tribal Fusion Bellydance, such as: Rachel Brice of The Indigo & Bellydance Superstars ( www.RachelBrice.com ), Frederique of Belly Groove ( www.BellyGroove.com ), Kami Liddle (www.KamiLiddle.com ), Sharon Kihara of The Indigo and Bellydance Supertars ( www.SharonKihara.com ), Atash Maya of San Diego ( www.AtashMaya.com ), Tribal Feat of California and Texas
( www.TribalFeat.com), Shawna Rai of Natya Hara ( www.NatyaHara.com ), Sherri formerly of Urban Tribal Dance Company, Katie Kay and Monica of Danger Sassy Pants (www.DangerSassyPants.com ), Devadasi World Fusion Dance ( www.Devadasi.com ), as well as up and coming projects Blue Damsel & Tribal Union.
As you can see, this is a great opportunity for you to advertise to your target audience, sponsor a much anticipated project, and indirectly donate to a philanthropic cause. If you are interested, and/or have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me as soon as possible as space is limited & the deadline for production is near.

Thank you for your time
“Be as You’d Like the World to Be,”
LaRa
Devadasi World Fusion Dance

Tix available now to members. It looks like they have a really cool new seating plan that will get many more people into each show than before. Do we have any Quebecoise in this tribe, has anyone up there seen it yet?

Can't wait.

John Gilkey and Dragone Productions

Are you all on the up and up that John Gilkey left Cirque Du Soleil and joined Franco Dragone's independent company to develop a new Las vegas Show?

The new show is for the Wynn Resort I think it's called Le Reve. (sp?) It'll be another water show like "O" It should open this weekend.
I almost got to work with John at the auditions in Las Vegas, but the people at Dragone apparently have no idea what a fire dancer is and stuck me with acrobats, and the canadian gymnastics olympic team. Something about the Sydney 2000 t-shirts gave them away. They tested our strength and flexability. I did pretty darn good, but compared to olympians I was cut in the first round, working with John was the third round. :(

If you don't know, John Gilkey was the MC character in Quidam, the bald guy with the little patch of hair. He was also the skywatcher in Vareki. He created both the characters I think.

On Bravo tonight... last night of the "Cirque-athon" (sorry, just joined the tribe)...

2 Cirque du Soleil shows beginning at 8/7pm central time. The two shows repeat 4 hours later, so if you miss the first, do not despair!

Whew... I have watched about 10 hours of Cirque in the past few days with my little group of circus performing friends. *twitch* I am so overstimulated!

Okay, so it's not Cirque, but it was produced by some of the same people. Think of it as a Cirque spinoff.
This show combines incredible horsemanship with the same type of acrobatics, wire work and other unique talents that we all have come to love from Cirque du Soleil.

Go see this show! Although I found some of the pieces a little sleepy, the second half had a lot more energy and made it well worth going. The horses are quite beautiful and the mastery the trainers have over their animals is truly amazing.

Please be aware that several articles were written on this show (you can google them) and all were pleasantly surprised at the love and care the trainers had for the horses. They were never mistreated, whipped, or forced to perform for treats.

Has anyone else seen it yet? I believe they are touring through 2006.

Tsunami Relief

Dear CDS Tribe Members-

You may have heard about the Tsunami that hit SE Asia. While I am new to the tribe community, I feel strongly compelled to get the word out as my family and I have plans (at this time) to be in Thailand in 2 weeks. Had this disaster hit only 2 weeks later we could have been on the beach at Phuket when it hit. Please read further for more information on how to help...

"The strongest earthquake for 40 years has claimed several thousands lives across South Asia.

Tidal waves triggered by the quake struck across the region causing widespread destruction." - SKY NEWS

"The largest earthquake to hit the planet in 40 years struck at 6:58 a.m. (local time) on Dec. 26 off the western coast of Sumatra. About 44,000 people have been reported to be killed in nine countries, including India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, following massive tsunamis, with thousands washed out to sea." - WORLDVISION

People out there need our financial help, and they need it now. As of Wednesday 29th December 2004, the "Tsunami Death Toll" stands at 60,000+. That figure is thought to rise dramatically still as more bodies are recovered from this tragic natural disaster.

There are many charities and aid agencies which have already deployed teams out to the areas affected. But due to the massive impact that these Tsumani's have created, the lives of millions of people will be affected by disease, lack of food, and more importantly, lack of fresh water.

This is not a begging letter or email. So if you can't afford to give, please feel free to get the word out, so that others who may be able to donate.
Right now there are people in South East Asia who have lost everything.
£1, $1, 1EURO, etc, is better than nothing at all.

Please feel free to add links of any charity accepting donations for this cause.

The Command Post is a newsblog that is being continuously updated to contain information regarding this disaster. More importantly it contains up to date information about where you can donate.

corporate giant

The new Ka show, the Beattles show, cruise ships... new shows are being cranked out so quickly now. I know, they are meeting popular demand but CDS is quickly becoming just another corporate giant in the entertainment industry to me now. They just don't seem unique anymore.

I performed for Quidam's opening night gala when they were in my city, for no pay, in exchange for a ticket to see their dress rehearsal, not a ticket for a real performance. The party was in a nightclub with a free bar for all the guests, who were mostly media folks, sponsors, VIP's etc. So I deduced that CDS paid the bar tab for all their guests but they wouldn't pay performers who worked the party. I don't get it, not when they have money to play with. So its looks good on my resume (which was what hooked me) but it showed a lack of respect for the performers.

...well, at least out of the shows I've seen, which is a lot. Technically amazing -- they could do an entire documentary on the stage / tank. The costumes are amazingly beautiful. With water as the safety net, there are no harnesses in this show!

Bellagio is a pretty decent casino as well...

heres the email i got today!

"You may have heard the rumors that Cirque du Soleil has been busy developing a brand new show at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Well, today the "conspiracy of silence" surrounding our latest adventure is beginning to come to an end. In fact, the fiery background on this letter is a hint of what is to come.

Soon to be revealed is the epic story of a pair of twins who must embark on a perilous journey to fulfil their individual destinies... OK, I admit that I got that from the script. But I can tell you that the word around here is that this show is going to be BIG! The director, Robert Lepage, is known around the world for his uncanny ability to bring cinematic techniques to the stage. So get ready for a live action adventure that features unique performance arts, multimedia and state-of-the-art technology.

I also have some great news for you! Club members can buy tickets online today for previews beginning November 26.

They say that "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas", but this experience will definitely remain with you forever!

More to come..."

Artists/Designers Wanted

Hi everyone, I'm new to this tribe. I am looking to make connections with artists and fashion designers of all types who are already in business for themselves (with their own customers), and can provide samples for us to market with.

We are (quietly) starting the launch of Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners, which has been in development for seven years by Creative Endeavors Consulting Company. Our mission statement:

Creative Endeavors Consulting Partners is comprised of entrepreneurial-minded individuals and partner companies with the vision, problem solving, and experienced leadership ability needed to bring together the worlds of creative and business.

We are looking to form Alliances with artists in various mediums. Their creativity and ours will be utilized in the development of projects and product lines. The type of people we are looking for are clothing and jewelry designers, painters, sculptures, fashion illustrators, entertainers (for special events), photographers (for photo shoots), etc. Right now I am only interested in people/companies in California to ease into things. Later we will expand our search nationwide.

Please understand this is *not* a situation where we take whatever the artist has made and go look for markets to sell it to. We are creating markets, and inviting artists that have aligned with us into deals. Please also understand that we do not want to be the artist's primary form of income, which is why we want to work with already established businesses.

For consideration, please send an email to rp@cecpartners.com with the subject "Artist Search: [fill in what you do]." In the email, please provide your contact info (location!), company info, a website link, bio, and anything you can think of that would help us to decide whether we could work with you.

Lastly, please understand if I can't respond immediately. We know there is a tremendous need in the market for artist representation. I am opening the door just a crack on Tribe to see who is out there. We will be working as fast as we can to sort through emails and get back to people, but it will take some time to get things rolling. Even if we can't use your particular talent right away, we will keep you on file for future consideration, if it makes sense for our needs.

Regards,
Rebekah

Many Years of Cirque du Soleil

It started as a birthday gift from my sister, then one from my mother, then friends. Every year they would visit the bay area I would see Cirque du Soleil as a birthday tradition. I was lucky enough that first year to get backstage with my sister and meet some of the actors and musicians, even to hang out with them in their cafeteria after the show. Though my french was horrid, it's an experience I'll never forget.

People often say that the best show you'll ever see is the first one you see, no matter what it is. Or maybe it's me that says that all the time. However, with Varekai being the first show to earn standing ovations During The Performance, that standard may have changed.

In any case, I've seen just about all you can of Cirque including working with their marketing team a few years in a row for arrivals in the San Francisco Bay Area. I've traveled to other cities for show, and brought as many as 30 friends to see them. I own the music to all the shows I've seen, learning eventually to just buy it on arrival at the tents rather than waiting in line at intermission. And so, having announced my qualifications, here's a quick rating of all the shows, out of a possible 5:

- La Cirque Reinvente: Montreal only, before they decided to travel with the show. I wish I could have seen that.
- La Nouvelle Experience: 5. I'm totally biased, this was my first show. My mind is still blown by the experience, especially getting to meet the cast backstage.
- Saltimbanco: 3. Those ethereal clowns, the music, and again good personal experiences made this one special. It only gets a 3 in comparison to better shows, and leaving room for 5's.
- Alegria: 4. Wow, there's a good reason this one won awards for music and that it is touring the US again. The trampoline act is completely original. Hard to believe they continued to outdo themselves 3 shows in a row.
- Quidam: 3. The first time my seats were mediocre plus we had to drive to San Jose. I agree on the great use of 3D, and the opening song is very powerful, giving me goosebumps every time I play the CD. I'd like to see this show again. The highly tragic/erotic silk rope act that Mariposa does in this show is 10 times more so at Teatro Zinzanni, where she now performs in SF.
- Dralion: 1. The first disappointment. If I wanted to see the Chinese circus I'd go see the Chinese circus. Music just so so too.
- Varekai: 5. Wow. The first show I saw multiple times. The physical acts are so frightening. In knowing what was coming in the show the second time seeing it, I watched the whole crowd gasp during a few acts. Note that there is a LARGE difference in this one compared to other shows: they do not use guide wires where they have for other shows in the past. The feeling is exilerating, and the clownwork, costumes, and CD are top notch.
- Mystere: 2. The first Vegas show was a motley of acts from previous shows. Now that there are 2 superior shows in town, I'm going to bet that this show goes dark soon. The baby/clown is pretty hilarious at times, and the "world" theme of the music is new for them, if you're a true fan I'd say run see it before it's gone.
- O: 5. Unbeatable. On par with the first show you see simply because it's that much different than previous performances. I recommend seeing this show twice as there are much varrying experiences to be had: viewing from stage level and having the whole performance disappear into the stage and even feeling the water at times if you're close enough, and watching from above stage level where you can see the performers under water and the scuba divers constantly giving them air. Wow. I'll say it again: Wow.
- La Nouba: ? I'm planning a trip to Orlando some time this year to catch this one, but still have heard nothing about it.
- Zumanity: ? Oh my god do I have to go to Vegas again. An adult Cirque du Soleil show. After seeing Mariposa up close, I can imagine how erotic this could get. I have numerous friends that have seen it now, all raving. My contact back in Montreal has told me the reception has been very good in Vegas, they expect the show to be there for a long time to come.
- 2005. Something is coming, something new. Some time out yet but I know we're all anxious...

Until then, merci.
Cavalia: Horse Dung

Don't believe the reviews folks. I think they are positive for political effect, to try to invite more shows to the Bay Area. While I'm down for the mulitudes of great shows that don't make it this far west coming to visit, I've got to say that Cavalia was a pretty big disappointment.

Merely my opinion, but here's the review:
- So so music. Highway robbery of Ravel's Balero for best piece.
- Very mediocre horse tricks get full raging applause, no idea why. It seemed as though everyone was applauding at once out of confusion. Or that there a lot of people in SF that have never seen a horse walk sideways.
- Worst acts go on WAY too long. Very slow parts of the show more than once.
- Way too many "poetic moments" for no comic relief.
- Hint: there's only so much you can do with a horse. The show could be 30 minutes long if you count up the pieces that actually have tricks involving horses. IE, lots of modern dance and cheap knock-offs of CdS acts.
- It just takes one person with their 5 year old daughter to stand at the end to applaud and the whole place has to stand for how the seats are set up. IE, a "fake" ovation happens every show, to which the reviews are capitalizing on greatly.
- Poorly designed seats leave no room to pass, and aren't attached well. Hard to explain, but my seat was broken as were many others I saw near me.
- Expensive. I think my tickets would have been $140 for the pair, though I got them comped for myself and a client. The 4 of us remarked that it was a good thing we didn't have to pay, and I noted that my client left before the end of the show.

Entertaining at the intermission all the poop they have to clean up though, heh.

Hi folks,
I'm new to the tribe and thought I'd say howdy. So far my wife and I have seen Varekai and Dralion. We're going to Atlanta next weekend to see Alegria. WOOHOO! I can't wait!

I wonder if the woman who sang the lead in the Bravo TV broadcast will be the same one performing this show. It's doubtful, but one can hope. That woman had an incredible voice!

Anyway, nice to meet y'all!

cirque du soliel has pumped out some spectacular innovations on the circus in general.. and shown us some acts that are only justifiably described as genius. some of my favorite acts i've seen to date are the hula hoopa lady from alegria and the two person giant blue ribbon acrobatic act from...fuck forget what it's called..starts with a D.. it also has a lady juggling white parosals with her feet and the ballet on lightbulbs acts (two more of my favorites)

Quidam, my fav

I'd have to say that "Quidam" is my favorite, mainly because of the dreamy, sureal music - and the plot itself is enchanting. It has an "Edward Sissorhand" feel to it. I've also see "Dralion" - I liked the acts more in that show than in "Quidam", but "Quidam" has one of my favorite acts is the male and female balancing act - where they look like marble statures. I have not seen "O" yet, but hopefully it'll some to Boston. If so, I'll deff. go. I'm also waiting to see the new show "Varaki", it looks great.

Solstrom

Has anyone seen Solstrom? What do you think of it?

I don't know if Solstrom is seen on American television (maybe on satellite tv?) but it is seen on cable television in Canada. It is Cirque du Soleil's latest TV series which pulls in different acts from different CDS productions and attempts to tell a story with them.

Hi, I just got Tix for the March show of Varekai here in S.D. Have any of you heard any reviews? I saw Dralion but was not as impressed as I was with Mystere. If anyone has seen the Varekai show can you give me a review?

Connections to CDS performers???

Two items:
First, the DAUGHTER of semi-witty SF Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll (SFGate.com) is a CDS performer, about whom he writes with barely concealed, self-effacing pride...
Two, though he's NOT a CDS performer, MARK MORFORD (also a SFGate.com columnist) provides meta-performances to die for... (see also "MarkMorfordIsGod.Tribe")

Ciao, babies...

I saw one, like...oh 10 years ago...
it was on a sampler tape for circuit city or some store like that, radio shack..some tech store..it had people playing with vertical poles.. climbing them swinging around them swinging around them on ribbons..there was a lot of fire...I remember it was like.. demons were performing in hell.. (please don't be offended by MY take on it) it was surreal..seems like there was a lot of red and black, fire and poles. Can anyone here help me identify it..does it ring a bell? I *really* need it but I don't know what it was :(
